Michael Jackson was due to make his triumphant return to the stage in London next month — but instead his sudden death has left millions of fans feeling they’ve lost a lifelong friend. The dramatic death of the brilliant singer seemed to obscure his recent controversies and kindle warmer memories of Jackson the child star and Jackson the show-stopping, moonwalking headliner. Word of Michael Jackson’s death jolted nearly everyone, from a young man in Colombia who was named after the King of Pop, to Malaysians who named a soy drink for him, to a generation of people around the world who have tried, in vain, to moonwalk. “It’s horrible news, so unexpected,” the Italian actress Sophia Loren told The Associated Press by telephone. “The world has lost an icon and music has lost treasures. He wrote songs that generations of yesterday, today and tomorrow will all keep on singing. What he wrote was amazing.” Loren and her children had been frequent visitors to Jackson at his Neverland ranch in California, developing an enduring friendship. “I hope that Michael will find that peace that maybe he did not have in the last 15 years.” In London, shocked fans gathered at the Lyric Theatre, where a live show based on Jackson’s record-selling album “Thriller” is being performed, and waited for news about refunds for some 750,000 tickets to his sold-out, 50-night run.

A spokeswoman for AEG Live — the promoters for the London concerts — declined to say how ticket refunds would be handled. She spoke on condition of anonymity, saying she was not authorized to speak to the media. There were poignant memories of his final public appearance when he came to London for a March news conference to announce his “This is it” concerts, which he said would mark his farewell to the London stage. A candlelight vigil at London’s Trafalgar Square was planned to honor the singer. Former South African President Nelson Mandela issued a message through his foundation saying Jackson’s loss would be felt worldwide. Michael Jackson sang at a birthday concert for Mandela in 1998. In 1999, according to local media reports at the time, he lunched with Mandela at a small gathering at which the South African anti-apartheid leader celebrated both his81st birthday and his and wife Graca Machel’s first wedding anniversary. Former Beatle Paul McCartney, who recorded with Jackson before they had a falling out over ownership of the Beatles catalogue, said his prayers went to Jackson’s family and fans. “It’s so sad and shocking,” he said. “I feel privileged to have hung out and worked with Michael. He was a massively talented boy-man with a gentle soul. His music will be remembered forever and my memories of our time together will be happy ones.” In Ireland, where Jackson made his temporary home in a castle south of Dublin in 2007, people remembered him as a kind and loving man. Eugene Lambert, Ireland’s best-known puppeteer, recalled his son’s puppet performance at a birthday party for Jackson attended by the singer’s three children. “Michael Jackson and the kids seemed to enjoy the show equally,” he said. “My son sang happy birthday to Michael Jackson, who seemed genuinely touched by the attention. Michael Jackson rang me that night to thank me for the show. He said he hoped he’d be as happy at his work as I am at my age, and of course I’m 80.” Rocker Lenny Kravitz recalled working with Jackson in the studio on an unreleased track and finding the man far different from the eccentric recluse often portrayed in the media. “It was the most amazing experience I’ve had in the studio,” Kravitz said. “He was funny. Very funny and we laughed the whole time. I also saw what a beautiful father he was. He was a beautiful human being. If not for him, I wouldn’t be doing what I’m doing. He gave me joy as a child and showed me the way to go.” Jackson’s death prompted broadcasters from Sydney to Seoul — where the news came early Friday — to interrupt morning programs, while fans remembered a “tortured genius” whose squeals and sliding moves captivated a generation and who sparked global trends in music, dance and fashion. Several world leaders weighed in. Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez called it “lamentable news,” though he criticized the media for giving it so much attention. Former South Korean President Kim Dae-jung, who had met Jackson, said: “We lost a hero of the world.” In Romania, where a tumultuous Jackson concert in 1992 helped mark the country’s new freedoms after the fall of the Soviet bloc, singer Lucian Viziru said he was stunned by the tragedy. “I feel like crying,” he told the AP, rubbing his eyes. “I grew up with him, I learned his dances, his songs, everything. My first ever cassette was ’Thriller.”’ A condolence board went up in downtown Bucharest. Garcia said the inmates in Cebu will hold a tribute for Jackson on Saturday with their “Thriller” dance and a minute of prayer. The flamboyant former Philippine first lady, Imelda Marcos, who cheered Jackson’s acquittal on child molestation charges in 2005, said she cried on hearing the news. “Michael Jackson enriched our lives, made us happy,” she said. “The accusations, the persecution caused him so much financial and mental anguish. He was vindicated in court, but the battle took his life. There is probably a lesson here for all of us.” In Bogota, Colombia, a 24-year-old tattoo artist named Michael Tarquino said his parents named him after Jackson.

Carrie Prejean dumps by Donald Trump as Miss California USA

Miss California USA Carrie Prejean, who stirred up a hornet's nest of controversy when Carrie Prejean said gays shouldn't be allowed to marry, got the word from pageant poobah Donald Trump on Wednesday: "You're fired."
Trump and other pageant leaders said Prejean was being sacked not because of her controversial remarks but because she hadn't been holding up her end of the agreement she signed when Carrie Prejean entered the pageant.
"This was a decision based solely on contract violations, including Ms. Prejean's unwillingness to make appearances on behalf of the Miss California USA organization," the California pageant's executive director, Keith Lewis, said in a statement.
Lewis had complained at a news conference last month that Prejean was skipping Miss California USA events while speaking out against gay marriage at unsanctioned appearances.
After the complaints reached Trump, who owns Miss California USA's parent organization, the mogul decided to give her a second chance and keep her on. On Wednesday he changed his mind and sided with Lewis.

"I told Carrie she needed to get back to work and honor her contract with the Miss California USA Organization and I gave her the opportunity to do so," Trump said in a statement. "Unfortunately it just doesn't look like it is going to happen."
Carrie Prejean spokeswoman Melany Ethridge declined to comment, saying she hadn't been able to reach the former beauty queen since the announcement of her ouster.
Carrie Prejean told the television show Access Hollywood she would never have been let go from the pageant had she not replied the way she did to a judge's question about gay marriage.
"It's just because of my answer, I think," Prejean said Wednesday shortly after learning of Trump's decision. "None of this would be happening right now if I just said, 'Yeah, gays should get married.'"

She also denied being derelict in her post-pageant duties.
"I've tried to reach out to them and I've done several appearances and I'm going to be presenting at the Special Olympics this weekend as an honorary guest," Carrie Prejean told the TV show. "I mean, I've been cooperating with them. I don't see why this is happening."

Donald Trump will reveal Tuesday whether he's telling Carrie Prejean "You're Fired!" or letting her keep her crown, but state officials just couldn't wait. While acknowledging it's Trump's decision - he owns the pageant - they took the bizarre step Monday of naming Carrie Prejean's runnerup, Tami Farrell, a special "Beauty of California Ambassador." Carrie Prejean has failed to make appearances, complained Miss California USA co-executive directors Keith Lewis and Shanna Moakler. She became a lightning rod for the gay marriage issue when she said, in reply to a question at the Miss USA pageant, that she didn't think it should be legal. Soon after, it was revealed Carrie Prejean had recently got breast implants. But the biggest controversy erupted over recently-revealed nude photographs. "Up until now we have just been riding along pretty much a passenger on this runaway train. But as of today, that ends," said Lewis. Carrie Prejean entered violated her contract, and hasn't been available for appearances, Lewis said. Moakler said Carrie Prejean's failure to reveal the photos were out there to organizers shows Carrie Prejean entered the pageant under false pretenses. "For us the severity of nudity in the one photo that Carrie Prejean has admitted was hers is not the issue. The fact that she entered the pageant and admitted it, is," Moakler said. Lewis admitted that the gay marriage controversy is also a factor. "Her message was dividing us rather than bringing us back together," he said. He blasted the National Organization for Marriage for making 21-year-old Prejean, who spoke out against gay marriage in the Miss USA pageant, its poster girl and encouraging her to shirk her pageant responsibilities in favor of "polarizing" politics. "Shame, shame, shame," he said. "Shame for doing it all the while knowing that you placed her in a position where she stood to possibly lose her crown not for her beliefs ...but for the breach of contract you so willingly encouraged." The state pageant has been investigating whether the blonde bombshell violated her contract by making public appearances for the National Organization of Marriage that conflicted with pageant business. Lewis and Moakler also revealed that they now have to go through non-pageant handlers to contact her and have been asked to provide special security for her at events. "We've never had that before: a beauty queen having to have a team of people protecting her in order to go out and create goodwill," he said. "We've been pretty much hijacked, unable to do the work at hand." He said he'll support Trump's decision either way. Prejean was named first runner-up in the Miss USA pageant on April 19. She became a YouTube sensation after she answered a question on gay marriage posed by guest judge Perez Hilton, an openly gay celebrity blogger. "I think in my country, in my family, I think that I believe that a marriage should be between a man and a woman," she said.

Former Chestnut Ridge resident Walter Loeb, who grew up in Germany and was arrested during the Kristallnacht attacks on Jews in 1938, died Monday at his home in Monroe Township, N.J., after an illness. He was 92. Advertisement Loeb was born July 12, 1916, in Birkenau, Germany, to Ferdinand and Rosalie Katzenstein Loeb, the younger of two sons. His daughter Judy Schreier of West Nyack said he was 22 and working in a bank on Nov. 10, 1938 - hours after the start of Kristallnacht, considered to be the unofficial beginning of the Holocaust. "He really lived his young adulthood there in, what was to him, his history, his homeland," she said. "He was so tied to his history and the language, too." She said he was arrested in Karlsruhe, Germany, in the hours after Kristallnacht began and was taken to Dachau, where he spent a year before being released. He got passage to the United States in 1940 and joined the U.S. Army, serving for five years in Okinawa and the South Pacific. He was awarded the Okinawa Battle Star and pre-Pearl Harbor medals. After the war, he earned a degree in television engineering in Chicago. He married Ilse Morgenstern, also a Holocaust survivor, on March 6, 1949, in Chicago. Loeb worked in television electronics for Sylvania Corp. in Massachusetts and for Raytheon Corp.; he later moved to New York and earned a degree in computer systems analysis from New York University. He worked as a senior systems analyst and technical writer at Chemical-Chase Manhattan Bank. He retired at age 74, and ran a German-English translation business for several years. Throughout his life in the U.S., he spoke about the Holocaust and what had happened. As an adult, he was invited back to Germany several times at the request of the mayor of Karlsruhe, and he was thrilled to make the trips, his daughter said. "What struck me most about my dad was how open-minded he was of all different types of people," she said. "People who would meet him, or hear my stories, would never fully understand how he could love his homeland of Germany. He would never discount an entire group of people and was always accepting of Germans of the new generation." Loeb was a member of the Jewish War Veterans, a board member of Temple Israel Synagogue in Natick, Mass., and a 50-year member of B'Nai Brith. He also belonged to Beth El Synagogue in East Windsor, N.J., and the Jewish Congregation of Concordia in Monroe Township, N.J. He was a member of several computer clubs and a volunteer leader of religious services for the elderly and a member of the Roaring Nineties Club in Monroe Township. He and his wife and four children moved to Rockland in 1966, settling in the part of Monsey now called Chestnut Ridge. He was a longtime member of Monsey Jewish Center and a Holocaust educator, working with his wife on projects and with the Holocaust Museum and Study Center in Chestnut Ridge, which his wife helped found. "He was a very honest, a very decent person," Schreier said. "He was just very honorable, very trustworthy and very intellectual. He loved to debate and he loved to read deep things about history ... because he lived it, he felt compelled to understand it. He had a sense of curiosity and a very strong work ethic." Anne Weissmann, who helped Ilse Loeb start the local Hidden Children group, said Walter Loeb was a true support for his wife; a great father; and good man. "He was so proud of whatever she was doing," Weissmann said. "He's just a great husband. Every husband should be like he was. There wouldn't be any divorce. It would be a perfect world." "Grey Gardens," the 1975 documentary by Albert and David Maysles about Edith Bouvier Beale and her daughter, "Little Edie," made a big splash at the time of its release because the two women living in splendid squalor in East Hampton were relatives of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis. Yet, as great as the Maysleses' film was, it focused on only six weeks in the Beales' lives. For the rest of the story, turn tonight to HBO's superb feature film, also called "Grey Gardens," which not only re-creates scenes from the documentary but also flashes back in the Beales' lives to give us a bit more insight into why two wealthy and well-connected women shut themselves up in a filthy mansion, littered with garbage and cat feces. Whether you know the Maysleses' film or not, you'll be astounded at the performances of Jessica Lange and Drew Barrymore as Big and Little Edie. In fact, let's not mince words here: Barrymore has sometimes been a pleasing personality in various films, but never, in anything she's ever done, was there a hint that she was capable of a performance like this one. She eerily replicates not only Little Edie's very odd manner of speaking (an aural mashup of Bronx-ese and tony finishing school) but also her disconcerting air of studied detachment as well. It's less of a surprise that Lange is just as good, but what she looks like in the part is a surprise: stringy white hair, thick-lensed glasses askew on her face, blackened and crooked teeth. Lange brings extraordinary power to Big Edie, showing her fear-fueled stubbornness, which, we quickly realize, is the reason she shut herself away from the world to begin with and dragged her daughter back from New York for company. The film also benefits from spot-on work by Ken Howard as Edith's husband, Phelan; Malcolm Gets as Edith's sycophantic piano accompanist in her younger days; and Jeanne Tripplehorn as Jacqueline Onassis. People who watched the Maysleses' documentary when it came out probably found the women strange, to say the least, but may have also felt sympathy for them in the end. That's the feeling that director and co-screenwriter Michael Sucsy is going for in the HBO film, and he achieves it in spades. Yes, at first, the Beales strike us as true oddballs. There's Big Edie, shuffling around the crumbling mansion with various articles of clothing tied around her body, commenting indifferently that a cat is urinating behind a portrait of her younger self propped against the bedroom wall. She bickers constantly with Little Edie, who tries to hide her bald head with a variety of sweaters, blouses and towels, tied like Renaissance headpieces at the nape of her neck, while musing that she'll probably never be able to leave Grey Gardens until her mother dies.

Sarah Michelle Gellar and Freddie Prinze Jr. are expecting their first child, a source close to the couple told People magazine. "They're very excited," the source said.

The 31-year-old Buffy the Vampire Slayer star and the 33-year-old Prinze, whose résumé of romantic comedies includes She's All That, met in 1997 on the set of the teen horror flick I Know What You Did Last Summer. They married in 2002 after dating for two years. For the couple's fifth wedding anniversary, Gellar legally changed her last name to Prinze.

The actors are currently hard at work on two upcoming television shows. Sarah Michelle Gellar will soon begin shooting the HBO pilot The Wonderful Maladys, which Sarah Michelle Gellar is also executive producing. The show is about dysfunctional New York siblings who lost their parents at a young age. Meanwhile, Prinze recently shot the pilot for No Heroics, an ABC comedy about off-duty superheroes.

Six weeks after the Jonases' concert movie famously underwhelmed, Miley Cyrus' Hannah Montana: The Movie hits theaters Friday, and the question arises: Will the tween franchise be the next, if you'll pardon the box-office expression, Jonas Brothers

Probably not. Which is a good thing. For Miley Cyrus.
"For Miley Cyrus, this movie is perfect," says Ashley Dos Santos, the tween social-marketing expert for Crosby~Volmer International Communications, a public-relations firm. "It's coming out at the perfect time."

In terms of the box-office expectations game, it's true: Miley Cyrus and her alter ego are catching the breaks.

Bitten by the Jonas Brothers, whose 3D Concert Experience film inspired opening-weekend talk of $30 million, but delivered only $12 million, box-office forecasters are handling Hannah Montana more cautiously.

Holdover Fast & Furious, not Miley Cyrus' movie, for one thing, is expected to finish the weekend race at No. 1, with a gross in the upper $20 millions. Hannah Montana is forecast by Exhibitor Relations' Jeff Bock to debut with about $18million to $20 million—$25 million, at best.

Neither projection would see the film match what the Jonases were supposed to do, nor what 2008's Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert Tour did, which was basically lead everybody to believe that tween concert movies that charge 3-D prices are supposed to open with $30 million. On the other hand, the projections would put the new Hannah Montana movie in a league where, per Box Office Mojo's Brandon Gray, it belongs: "I think The Lizzie McGuire Movie is a better comparison."

Though now buried in the modern Disney Channel age of The Suite Life of Hannah School Musical, in 2003, the Hilary Duff TV-turned-movie comedy was a box-office hit, debuting with $17.4 million.

"American Idol" Overtime Pays Off for Adam Lambert

"American Idol" ran nearly nine minutes long Tuesday, preventing potentially millions of viewers who rely on their DVRs from seeing the performance of Adam Lambert -- which, in turn, affected the number of viewer votes Lambert received.

Luckily for Fox, Lambert, one of this season's most popular Idolettes, was not given the old heave-ho the next night; it was Scott MacIntyre instead who had received the fewest votes from viewers Tuesday night and was removed from the competition at the end of last night's results-and-product-plugging show.

Neither host Ryan Seacrest nor any of the "Idol" judges in any way acknowledged the show's potentially serious blunder. However, when the results show finally got down to it, Lambert was the very first Idolette Seacrest dealt with, and the host noted that the previous night Simon Cowell had had to speak for all the judges (because, of course, there had been no time for the other judges to critique Lambert's performance).

But Seacrest didn't ask Lambert how he felt about being handled differently from all the other competitors during Tuesday's show. Rather, he was asked how he felt about having received a standing ovation from Cowell.

Farrah Fawcett in hospital....

Farrah Fawcett has been hospitalized in the latest stage of her battle against cancer, a producer working with the actress said Monday.

"She is not unconscious, she is not unresponsive, and she is not comatose," Craig Nevius told CNN.

He added that Fawcett "is surrounded by family and friends." She "has a real iron will" and is "a fighter," he said.

Nevius has been working with the 62-year-old on a documentary about her fight with cancer.

Earlier, he told People magazine that Fawcett had checked into "a Los Angeles hospital."

Fawcett was diagnosed in 2006. People magazine reported that she has anal cancer.

Early in 2007, Fawcett said she was told her cancer had gone into remission. Her official Web site has posts from February, 2007 celebrating the news.

But the cancer returned later that year.

Fawcett was a model best known for bit parts and commercials, and as "Six Million Dollar Man" actor Lee Majors' wife, when she shot a best-selling pinup poster in early 1976 at the behest of a Cleveland, Ohio, company called Pro Arts. Photographer Bruce McBroom placed Fawcett -- then known as Farrah Fawcett-Majors -- in the Indian blanket-draped front seat of his 1937 Chevy and snapped away. The poster, with Fawcett's million-dollar smile front and center and right nipple obvious through the fabric of her red bathing suit, became a sensation.

Soon after the photo shoot, Fawcett was asked to join the cast of a new Aaron Spelling TV show, "Charlie's Angels," about a trio of female detectives who work for a mysterious man named Charlie. Danica Patrick's infuriating, yet fascinating

One of these days, someone is going to forget that Danica Patrick is a "lady" and haul off and ...

Well, you know.

And she'll have no one to blame but herself.

How many times has she put her hands on another driver in a fit of pique after a wreck? Ask Jaques Lazier (Fontana, 2005). Ask Dan Wheldon (Milwaukee, 2007).

She hides behind her gender, knowing no one dares get physical with a female (except another female, like, say, Milka Duno at Mid-Ohio in 2008).

The latest incident happened Sunday in the Indy Racing League's 2009 opener at St. Petersburg, Fla. Patrick and Raphael Matos (an IndyCar Series rookie, but at 27, the same age as Patrick, not an inexperienced driver) collided in a turn and wrecked.

Video replays seemed to support Patrick's later contention that Matos, who was trying to pass in tight quarters, was to blame for the crash.

What wasn't clear from the video was how, exactly, she dealt with him immediately after exiting her car. According to The Associated Press report, Patrick "patted Matos on the helmet as if to say 'Use your head.' " Then the two had "a lively discussion" while they waited for a ride back to pit lane.

"A lively discussion." I'm sure it was.

Again, only Patrick and Matos really know what the nature of her helmet-pat was, but do you think he might have taken exception had anyone else in the field (read, any male driver) done the same thing? "Put your hand there again, pal, and you might not get it back" would have been a perfectly understandable response.

The funny thing is, as exasperating as Patrick's "tough guy" routine is, it's also refreshing. I mean, I'm writing about the IRL and you're reading about it. If you're an open-wheel junkie and will read anything on the subject, fine, but there are a lot more people who wouldn't know Tony Kanaan from Tony the Tiger who are here just because the headline said something about "Danica."

Of course, a lot of you are merely looking for the link to her photo gallery. Can't say that I blame you.

But Danica would be good for racing even if she looked like A.J. Foyt. Not because she's such a great driver (although she's better than a lot of people are willing to give her credit for), but because she's passionate and feisty and fiery. She lets her real emotions show, even if they sometimes reveal her inner 2-year-old.

She's wasting a huge opportunity by staying in the IRL, though. To most of America, it begins and ends with the Indy 500. Otherwise it might as well have gone out of business once they stopped running those Andy Granatelli STP commercials.

Imagine what Danica could do for NASCAR. The stock car circuit could use a guy with a little fire, even if he's a girl. It'd be better than the ultra-careful, never-say-anything-bad-about-the-other-guy, corporate-spokesman-types they have behind the wheel right now.

Take away the one guy who can stir most fans' emotions (but only because of his last name), and what have you got? You've got the PGA Tour without Tiger Woods, that's what you've

While friends and family gather in Costa Rica to help Tom Brady and Gisele Bündchen celebrate their wedding weekend, Bridget Moynahan – the mother of Brady's 1½-year-old son, John Edward Thomas Moynahan – is headed to Vancouver, to start a new movie.

But in the week leading up to the festivities in Central America, a soap opera involving all three adults was shaping up, kicking off with Bündchen's expansive remarks to Vanity Fair, in which she said she considered young John Edward her very own child

"It's not like because somebody else delivered him, that's not my child," said the supermodel, 28. "I love him the same way as if he were mine. I already feel like he's my son, from the first day."

That apparently didn't sit well with those in Moynahan's inner circle. A source close to the 37-year-old model-actress tells PEOPLE, "Bridget has her own life, she doesn't need to be involved in the drama of all this, and she finds it disrespectful that her son is being paraded around in front of the paparazzi when she’s specifically made it a point of keeping him away from that."

The source went on to say pointedly, "I can count on two hands, in two years, the number of times Bridget has been photographed with that baby. I can count on two hands the number of times in the past month that Gisele has been photographed with that baby."

In an even more personal attack, the source said, "If Tom is such a great father as everyone likes to say, then you would think that he'd respect the privacy of his young child and would ask his wife not to use his son as a publicity prop and a subject of public discussion."

Liam Neeson and Vanessa Redgrave watched the lights dim on Broadway Thursday night in honor of the late actress Natasha Richardson.
Natasha Richardson, who was Neeson's wife and Redgrave's daughter, died Wednesday at the age of 45 of an epidural hematoma due to blunt impact. Natasha Richardson had been involved in a skiing accident Monday in Canada and sustained a fatal head injury.

Usmagazine.com said Neeson and Redgrave were met by their married actor friends Sarah Jessica Parker and Matthew Broderick at the light-dimming tribute to the beloved Tony Award-winning actress Thursday on the Great White Way in Manhattan.

Lawyer Shawn Chapman Holley said the whole affair "was really much ado about nothing" and may stem from the fact that the young actress had recently left the rehab center Lindsay Lohan had been attending to go to another. Lindsay Lohan was not arrested and she did not attend Monday's hearing. The matter dates back to Lohan's arrest in May 2007 for driving under the influence (DUI) and hit-and-run. After a stay in rehab, Lindsay Lohan was caught two months later for another DUI and for possession of cocaine.

The arrests led to her serving a mere 84 minutes in jail. Lindsay Lohan was also sentenced to 10 hours of community service and three years of probation. The queen of Hollywood party nights and a favorite target of the paparazzi, the former Disney child star was once considered one of the most promising actresses of her generation. But her career has dipped many times since 2005 amid legal woes, stops in rehab and cinematic flops.
